Lola and the Dinosaur

By Chris Perkin

Lola tiptoed through the warm green jungle. Her hair was in a little bun on top of her head and she wore a pink cherry top and soft pajama pants. She heard a tiny rustle behind the big leaves. Lola put on her big kind smile and peeped closer.

Behind a fern peeked a baby dinosaur with big shiny eyes and tiny claws. Lola and the baby dinosaur looked at each other and both jumped a little. They were a bit scared. Lola whispered, "Hello," very softly.

Lola made a silly face and stuck out her tongue. The baby dinosaur sniffed and then snuffled a tiny laugh. They wagged their heads and decided to be friends. Lola held the dinosaur's warm scaly paw.

Then a deep rumble rolled through the trees. "Rooo!" called a big dinosaur—mummy was looking for her baby. The baby dinosaur trembled and huddled close to Lola. Lola wanted to help.

Lola remembered seeing sticky grass by the river. "If we find sticky grass we can make a gentle bandage for mummy's sore back," she said. They ran, splashing over stones and ducking under vines. The jungle smelled sweet and loud.

At the river grew a funny patch of long sticky grass that stuck to Lola's fingers. The baby dinosaur helped pull a soft piece. They giggled because the grass tickled. Lola rolled the grass into a green little pad.

When mummy dinosaur stopped to listen, Lola and the baby climbed up and gently pressed the sticky grass on her back. Mummy turned and smiled a big toothy smile. She said, "Thank you," in a rumble like a hug. The baby dinosaur nuzzled close.

Mummy carried the baby on her back and they waved goodbye to Lola. Lola waved back and felt her heart jump with joy. She skipped home through the jungle, wearing her cherry top and thinking of her new friend. "See you soon," Lola sang.
