Lola on the Cruise

By Chris Perkin

Lola was four and very funny. She wore a pink shirt with cherries and her hair in a little bun. Grandma wore glasses, a soft blue cardigan and a brown floral top, and she talked a lot. Grandpa wore a red-striped shirt and beige pants and smiled, but he was a bit grumpy and liked to say everyone should share.

Grandma and Grandpa took Lola on a big cruise around the Baltic Sea. The ship stopped at pretty towns with cobblestone streets and colorful houses. On the ship there was a small museum with a shiny amber pendant called the Baltic Star.

One night, the Baltic Star was gone from its glass case. The crew was worried because the pendant helped the ship glow during the night parade. Grandma talked quickly about many ideas and Grandpa grumbled, but he said, "We must be fair and find it."

Lola wanted to help, so she looked for clues. She found tiny feathers and a bit of sand by the museum door. On the floor was a small paper with a drawing of a beak.

Lola followed the feathers up to the deck and saw a playful seagull on the mast. The seagull had shiny things tucked into a little nest high above. Grandpa stood below ready to help, and Grandma called up, telling Lola to be careful.

Lola climbed with Grandpa holding the ladder steady and Grandma cheering softly. She spoke kindly to the seagull and offered a tiny cherry from her pocket. The seagull let go and the Baltic Star fell gently into Lola's hands.

They put the amber pendant back in its glass case and everyone cheered. The night parade lit up and music played across the sea. Grandpa smiled, proud that sharing and kindness helped, and Grandma told the whole story again and again.

Lola laughed and hugged her grandparents as the ship sailed under the stars. They drank warm cocoa and watched the lights sparkle over the Baltic Sea. Lola learned that being kind, brave, and fair can solve a mystery.
