Lola on the Submarine

By Chris Perkin

Lola ran to the beach at sunrise, her hair in a little top bun bouncing as she skipped. She wore her favorite pink cherry shirt and soft pants that made her feel cozy. The sand tickled her toes and she laughed a funny giggle. Something colorful bobbed at the water's edge.

A bright-feathered captain stood by a small boat and called, “Ahoy!” He wore a blue captain hat and had a cheerful squawk. "I am Captain Parrot," he said, and he smiled with a twinkle in his eye. He invited Lola to come see the mermaids in his tiny submarine.

Lola climbed into the yellow submarine and pressed her face to the round porthole. The little boat hummed and sank into the gentle waves like a sleepy whale. Lola giggled and watched bubbles float past her nose.

Outside the window the sea was full of glittering green and blue light. Fish zipped by like silver arrows and a friendly turtle waved its flipper. Captain Parrot told a silly joke that made Lola clap and laugh.

Suddenly three mermaids swam close, their tails flashing like moonlight. They smiled with bright eyes and sang a soft bubbly song. Tiny pearl bubbles floated up and popped like little bells.

The mermaids taught Lola how to make a perfect round bubble that drifted like a tiny moon. They played a seaweed ribbon game and clapped along in the water. Lola was kind and funny and everyone giggled together.

When the sun leaned down to the sea, Captain Parrot steered the submarine back to the shore. Lola waved goodbye as the mermaids bowed and blew sparkling kisses. Captain Parrot promised, "We will visit again," with a friendly squawk.

Back on the warm sand, Lola held a shiny shell the mermaids had given her. She put the shell on her nightstand so she could remember the song and the sparkle. That night she tucked her top bun and smiled as she dreamed of the sea.
