Lola's New Bike

By Chris Perkin

Lola woke up on her birthday and found a shiny pink bike with stabilisers in the living room. She wore her cherry shirt and put her hair in a little top bun. Her new helmet sat in the basket and she laughed, ready to ride.

Lola pushed the pedals and the stabilisers clicked as she zoomed down the path. Her cheeks were rosy and she giggled when the wind tickled her face. She decided to visit Grandma and Grandpa all by herself.

On the way Lola waved at the neighbors and stopped to pick a dandelion. A tiny bird hopped near her bike and she shared a crumb with it. The road felt like an adventure under her wheels.

Grandma opened the door wearing a light blue cardigan, jeans and soft slippers, and her glasses shone as she smiled. She talked and talked, saying, "My lovely Lola!" and fussed over Lola's helmet. Grandma's hair made a neat bob and her voice sounded like a warm blanket.

Grandpa stood behind her in a red striped shirt and khaki pants, with white hair and a small moustache above his smile. He looked a bit grumpy at first but his eyes were kind. He liked everyone to share and be fair, and he called Lola over with a gentle grumble.

They sat at the kitchen table with cool lemonade and warm cookies on a plate. Grandma chattered about the flowers while Grandpa helped tighten Lola's stabilisers and tuck her hair. Lola sprinkled crumbs like confetti and everyone laughed.

After snacks they went out to the garden and Lola showed them how she could ride and stop. Grandpa clapped and Grandma talked about when she first learned to ride, telling silly stories. Together they walked beside her as she rode in little circles, beaming.

When the sun began to go down, Lola gave Grandma her dandelion and hugged both grandparents. Grandma kept talking happily and Grandpa grinned a quiet grin. Lola fell asleep that night dreaming of more pink-bike adventures with her kind, chatty Grandma and gentle, fair Grandpa.
