Maisie is being brave
By Nina Forrester
Maisie stood by the slide, brushing her shoulder-length light brown hair out of her eyes. "You can't play with us today, Maisie," snapped Emma, crossing her arms tightly. "Yeah, your trainers aren't cool enough for our club," added Liam with a mean laugh. Maisie felt a small knot form in her stomach as they ran away without her.

She walked over to the swings alone, watching the others whisper and point from across the playground. Usually, Maisie just looked at her feet and waited for them to be nice again, but today the knot in her tummy felt different. It wasn't just sadness anymore; it was starting to feel like a little spark of anger. She knew she was a good friend, even if they couldn't see it.

Maisie remembered what her dad always told her about being strong and believing in herself. She took a deep breath, clenched her hands into fists, and hopped off the swing. "I don't have to listen to them," she whispered to herself, standing up taller than before. Being kind was important, but letting people be mean to her was not okay.

Marching right up to the group by the jungle gym, Maisie looked Emma straight in the eye. The laughter stopped as everyone looked at her in surprise. "I like my trainers," Maisie said clearly, her voice shaking just a tiny bit. "And true friends don't make people feel bad just for fun."

Emma blinked, looking embarrassed, while Liam shuffled his feet in the dirt. "I'm going to play tag," Maisie announced confidently. "You can join me if you want to be nice, but I’m done being teased." She turned around and ran toward the grassy field, feeling lighter than air.

For the rest of recess, Maisie played tag with some new kids who were happy to have her join. She felt a warm glow of pride inside her chest because she had finally used her voice. Standing up for herself was scary, but feeling brave was the best feeling in the world. She heard her daddy's voice "Time to go ", she couldn't wait to get home.

Maisie burst through her front door, dropping her backpack in the hall with a thud. "Aria! Aria!" she called out, spotting her little sister building a tall tower of blocks in the living room. Aria jumped up, her face lighting up the room like sunshine. "Maisie! Did you have an adventure?" she chirped happily.

"I sure did," Maisie beamed, hugging her sister tight. "I was brave today, Aria, and I didn't let anyone push me around." Aria clapped her hands, her eyes wide with wonder and excitement. "You're my superhero, Maisie!" she giggled, and Maisie knew she was exactly right.
