Marcus's trip to England

By Marcus Perkin

The hum of the airplane engines finally faded as Marcus stretched his legs, relieved to touch down in Manchester after leaving the sunny skies of Barcelona behind. Beside him, eight-year-old Evan was already fidgeting, ready to unleash some prank-filled chaos on English soil. They navigated the busy terminal until they spotted Simon waving enthusiastically near the arrivals gate, ready to start their holiday adventure.

With the luggage loaded, the group began the scenic drive north toward the Lake District, a journey made memorable by Alba belting out show tunes from the passenger seat. They eventually pulled up to their accommodation in Kendal, stopping in front of 98 Highgate. To Marcus’s delight, their AirBnB was situated right above a bustling pub, promising a lively stay in the heart of the town.

The next morning, Alba was up early, humming a melody as she organized the day's itinerary with the precision of a stage director. She whisked Evan away to a friend's house to burn off some of his mischievous energy, leaving twelve-year-old Marcus free to pursue his own plans. It was time for a long-awaited reunion with his friend Jasper.

Marcus and Alba tracked down Jasper, who was just as adventurous and silly as Marcus remembered. The two boys immediately set off to explore the town center, eager for independence and a bit of fun. Their first stop was a row of electronic massage chairs in the shopping center, where they sat vibrating and laughing until their teeth chattered.

After working up an appetite, the duo headed straight for McDonald’s to feast on burgers and fries. Marcus dutifully tapped his card to pay for the meal, noting with a wry grin that Simon had promised to foot the bill later. It is a debt that, quite famously in family lore, Simon has yet to repay to this very day.

The play date ended all too soon, and after a reluctant goodbye to Jasper, the travel party regrouped for the next leg of their journey. Alba, Simon, Marcus, and Evan piled back into the car, trading the hills of the Lakes for the rolling landscape of Yorkshire. They were headed to West Bretton to see the grandparents, and the car was filled with anticipation.

Pulling into the driveway, they were greeted by the warm smiles of Pauline and Colin. Seventy-five-year-old Pauline immediately fussed over everyone to ensure they were comfortable, while Colin, ever the comedian at seventy-eight, cracked a joke about their luggage that had Marcus chuckling despite his travel fatigue.

The house felt truly full the next day, Christmas Eve, when the rest of the family arrived to join the celebration. Chris and Jess walked in laden with bags, followed closely by four-year-old Lola, a whirlwind of energy who began zooming around the living room instantly. The volume in the house went up significantly, matched only by the rising festive spirit.

That evening, the kitchen was filled with the savory aroma of a traditional family feast. Everyone gathered around the large table to devour plates of prawns, fluffy rice, and perfectly cooked salmon. Between bites, Chris cracked jokes that had the table roaring with laughter, while Alba hummed Christmas carols in the background.

The anticipation in the air was palpable as the evening wound down, with Evan and Lola practically vibrating with excitement for the morning to come. Sleep was difficult with so much adrenaline in the house, but eventually, the lights went out, leaving the family to dream of the twenty-fifth of December.

Christmas morning arrived with a shout of joy as everyone gathered in the living room, surrounded by torn wrapping paper and bright ribbons. Marcus laughed as Lola zoomed past with a new toy, and the room was filled with the sound of tearing paper and happy exclamations. It was a chaotic, loud, and wonderful start to the day.

As the afternoon settled in, Marcus looked around at his family, happy and exhausted from the festivities. It had been a whirlwind trip from Barcelona to Yorkshire, full of friends, unreturned McDonald's money, and laughter. It was the perfect end to the Christmas holiday.
