Sabari and Rama - The Virtue of hope
By Chandrika Sivakumar
Dedicated to Great Rishis of Sanadana Dharma
The story of Shabari starts from the demon Kabandan who was freed from his curse by Sree Rama. Kabandhan explains Rama on his further path to search Sita devi. He advised Rama and Lakshmana to visit the ashram of Matanga hermit, and bless the ascetic named Shabari. Long ago, a kind but uneducated woman named Shabari lived with her calm and composed teacher, Guru Matanga. When the wise Guru knew his time on earth was ending, he asked Shabari to look after their ashram. Pleased by her devotion, Matanga blessed her by saying "'from today onwards the only word that should come from your mouth is RAMA. He made a wonderful promise that one day she would meet the divine Lord Shri Ram. Filled with hope, Shabari dedicated her life to her Guru's words and began her long wait.

Shabari starts crying in gratitude, thinking what did I do to deserve this. From that day onwards every breath of Shabari uttered only RAMA. Everyday she would go to the forest and pluck fresh flowers and fruits, thinking what if Rama comes to my door today. She would tell all the passer by that my Guru has told that Sri Rama is going to visit me. By and by twelve years passed. Everyday without fail for twelve years, Shabari went to the forest and plucked fresh flowers and fruits for Rama. Such was Shabari's bhakti/devotion and shraddha in her Guru. Now, over 90 years old she thinks, my soul is going to leave the body very soon. How long are you going to keep me waiting my dear lord Rama. She says, âmy Guru has told me that Sri Rama will definitely come, hence I will not allow the soul to leave this feeble body till then.â Around that time Rama comes to Chitrakoot searching for his beloved Sita and knocks at Shabari's door. Her happiness knew no bounds.

Shabari was overjoyed and washed their feet with her happy tears. Wanting to give Sree Rama the best food, she took a tiny bite of each berry to make sure it was perfectly sweet before handing it to him. Even though the berries were bitten, Sree Rama ate them with a huge smile because they were offered with such deep love. Young Lakshmana stood quietly, shedding tears of joy as he watched this beautiful moment between God and a true friend.

Shabari felt shy because she was old and wearing unclean clothes, but Lord Rama spoke to her gently. He told her that he did not care about a person's wealth, power, or appearance at all. He explained that a person without love in their heart is just like an empty cloud that brings no rain. Sree Rama blessed Shabari, showing the world that true devotion and pure hope are the greatest gifts anyone can offer.
