Sliding Penguins

By Lola Perkin

Lola stood on the sparkly white ice. Zoom! Swish! Someone was moving very fast.

It was Slide, the most skillful lady penguin in the whole snowy world. Slide had funny floppy hair and a bright blue beak.

Behind her, Slide pulled a little plastic ice cube tray on a string. She used it to carry tiny snowball snacks while she skated.

Lola giggled as Slide did a spin, a jump, and a silly little dance. 'Wow, Slide, you are amazing!' Lola cheered.

Slide skated over and gave a happy honk. 'I love skating,' said Slide. 'It makes my flippers feel so free!'

'I have a big job today,' Lola said with a kind, funny smile. 'I need to teach ten baby penguins how to skate.'

Lola pointed to the snowy bank. Ten tiny, fluffy baby penguins were tumbling and bumbling in the soft snow.

Page 19

'They keep falling on their little bottoms,' Lola laughed. 'Will you help me teach them, Slide?'

Page 21

Slide nodded her floppy hair and shared her snowball snacks from the ice cube tray. 'Of course! Let us get them out on the ice.'

Slide showed the babies how to glide on one foot, then the other. Lola held their little wings so they would not fall.

Soon, all ten baby penguins were sliding and swishing across the ice. They looked like little fluffy puffballs zooming by!

Lola and Slide cheered for their new little skaters. The ice was filled with happy, sliding penguins all day long.
