For my inner child, who couldn't find her strength or resilience. And who had no idea she would be the strong woman she is today.
There once was a little girl named Zuri. She had two curly puffs in her hair and a cute smile with a missing tooth. Zuri watched the other kids run fast and jump high. She wanted to be strong just like them!

One day, Zuri decided to try. She ran as fast as she could, but she tripped and bumped her left knee. She put a band-aid on it and tried again, but her legs felt so heavy.

That afternoon, Zuri sat on the grass and hugged her knees. "I do not think I can do this," she whispered. Her chest felt tight, and her light brown eyes felt hot. "I am just not good at it."

The next day, Zuri did not want to play outside at all. Her sneakers sat right by the door, waiting for her. Zuri just turned her head and walked away.

Then, a brave little thought popped into Zuri's smart mind. "What if you just tried one more time?" the thought asked. Zuri took a deep breath, found her courage, and put her shoes back on.

She went outside and ran just a little bit. She did not go very far, and she did not go very fast. She still stumbled, but this time, she did not stop right away.

Days and weeks went by, and Zuri kept trying. She was not the fastest runner, and she did not jump the highest. But she was happy, adaptable, and she always kept going.

One sunny day, Zuri ran all the way past the big tree she used to stop at! She paused, looked back, and showed a big, proud smile. "I didn't give up," she said softly. For the very first time, Zuri felt truly strong.
