To all our students who are full of wonder. Let's savour every moment.
Deep down in the dark, cozy dirt lived a little worm named Wiggly. He wore tiny round glasses to help him see in the dim light. All around his home, there were long, tickly plant roots hanging down.

Wiggly looked up at the roots and scratched his little head. "Why do I live way down here in the mud?" he wondered. He wanted to know what his special job was in the big, wide world.

As he wiggled along, he bumped into a long, bright orange root. "Hello! I am a carrot," said the root with a cheerful voice. "I am sweet and crunchy, and I love growing in the cool earth."

Next, Wiggly found a round, purple vegetable resting in the dirt. "I am a beetroot!" she said proudly. "I taste earthy and sweet, and I make people's tongues turn purple when they eat me."

Wiggly adjusted his little glasses and looked at his new friends. "How do you grow so big and colorful?" he asked them. "What do you need to survive down here?"

"We need water to drink and warm sunlight from above," the carrot explained. "But most of all, we need soft, healthy soil," added the beetroot. "If the dirt is too hard, we cannot stretch our roots!"

Wiggly looked at the packed dirt around them. "I can help with that!" he cheered. He started to wiggle, twist, and turn the earth upside down.

As Wiggly tunneled through the ground, the soil became soft and fluffy. Now the carrot and beetroot had plenty of room to stretch their little roots. Wiggly was making a perfect home for them!

Then, Wiggly learned a very silly secret. When his tummy was full of dirt, he left behind little piles of worm poop! "Your poop gives us magic nutrients!" the vegetables cheered.

The nutrients from Wiggly were like super vitamins for the plants. They helped the carrots grow extra orange and the beetroots grow extra purple. Wiggly was feeding his friends!

Wiggly smiled a huge, happy smile. He finally understood why he lived underground. His job was to make the soil soft and feed the plants so they could grow big and strong.

Being a little worm was a very important job after all! Wiggly wiggled his glasses back into place and tunneled deeper, excited to help more roots in his wonderful underground world.
