Happy Birthday Andi
One bright morning, Andi woke up with a restless energy she couldn’t quite explain. It was the kind of feeling that whispered, go somewhere. Not somewhere planned. Just…somewhere. She pulled on her favourite shorts, a comfy T-shirt, and her signature beanie over her red hair before grabbing her car keys. With the music turned up loud and the windows down, she let the winding roads guide her. The further she drove, the lighter she felt.

Somehow, without even trying, the road led her to the rugged coast of Kerry, where the air tasted of salt and the sky stretched endlessly wide. It was the kind of place that made you slow down and breathe a little deeper. Andi didn't hesitate; she unpacked her kite and held it up to the breeze. Within moments it was dancing high above the sand, swooping and spinning above the blue sky. Andi laughed as she watched it climb higher and higher.

When the wind settled, the sparkling Atlantic looked too inviting to resist, so Andi waded in for a swim. She moved carefully through the shallows, keeping a sharp eye on the sand to avoid the sting of hiding weever fish. The water was brisk and refreshing, shocking the heat from her skin as she dove happily through the rolling waves.

Drying off later with a towel wrapped around her shoulders, and having had lunch, Andi looked out across the harbour and that’s when she spotted it. A boat. Not just any boat. A magnificent boat rocking gently on the tide. Painted clearly on the hull were the words The Black Pearl, a name that made her grin instantly because she adored Pirates of the Caribbean. It felt like a sign, a little nod from the universe that she was exactly where she needed to be.

Andi strolled down the pier and, using her usual Andi charm and a friendly smile, struck up a conversation with the boat's owner. Before long, the owner laughed and said, “Alright then- take her out for a little while.” Andi could hardly believe her luck. Soon she was gliding smoothly over the water as the coastline faded behind her. The evening sky began to darken, turning the sea into a deep, mysterious mirror.

Alone on the quiet water, this is what she had really been hoping for. The stars. Andi leaned back to watch the stars ignite one by one like tiny lanterns hung in the night. She cracked open a Kinder Egg, eager for the chocolate, but found herself frowning at the tiny plastic toy inside. The instructions made absolutely no sense, requiring her to turn the pieces upside down and backwards while the boat bobbed rhythmically beneath her.

She was determined to figure it out, but by the time she finally snapped the last piece of the puzzle into place, Andi looked up and gasped, realising she had drifted much farther out than she intended. Laughing at her own distraction, she quickly steered The Black Pearl back toward the distant, twinkling lights of the harbour. She pushed the boat as fast as she dared until the familiar outline of the beach came back into view.

Stepping back onto the sand, the night felt calm and the sea whispered gently against the shore. Andi pulled her beanie down snug over her ears, reflecting on how a day with no plan had turned into the perfect adventure of sailing ships and chasing stars. As she walked back to her car, she thought about how the best journeys sometimes begin with nothing more than a feeling. And maybe, just maybe… tomorrow there would be another one waiting.
