Molly's Rainbow Bridge

By Juliane Herold

To Oskar- Molly is always by your side.

Oskar and his dog Molly were the best of friends. Molly was a gentle German shepherd with a beautiful dark face. Ever since Oskar was a tiny baby, Molly was always right by his side. They did everything together.

When Oskar kicked his little soccer ball, Molly happily wagged her long tail. When Oskar went to bed, she was right beside him.

When Oskar was a toddler, Molly loved to play fetch in the big green garden. Oskar would throw a red rubber ball as far as he could. Molly would run very fast to bring it right back to him.

They also went on long, fun walks around the neighborhood. Molly loved to sniff the tall trees and watch the little birds fly. She was always calm and gentle, stepping softly beside Oskar.

At night, Oskar felt safe and warm with Molly close by. Molly had a cozy bed right next to Oskar's bed. If Oskar woke up in the dark, he could hear Molly breathing softly.

As Oskar grew bigger and taller, Molly was getting older. Her dark face started to get little white hairs around her nose. She walked a little slower on their morning walks.

Molly did not want to run and play fetch in the garden anymore. Instead, she liked to lie in the warm yellow sun. Oskar was a kind and sensitive boy, so he sat gently next to her.

One day, Molly was too tired to stand up. Oskar felt a little sad, but he gave her very soft hugs. He whispered into her floppy ear to tell her she was a good girl.

Oskar's mom and dad explained that Molly was very old and her body was tired. It was time for Molly to cross the Rainbow Bridge. The Rainbow Bridge is a beautiful place where dogs can run and play again.

Oskar gave Molly one last kiss on her soft dark head. He thanked her for being his best friend since he was born. Molly wagged her tail just a little bit to say she loved him too.

Now, Molly plays fetch in the bright clouds past the Rainbow Bridge. Oskar still wears his favourite soccer shirt and plays in the grass. Sometimes, he looks up at the beautiful sky and smiles.

Page 27

Oskar knows that Molly is never truly gone. Even though he cannot see her, she is always right by his side in his loving heart. Best friends stay with us forever.
